The Cowichan Valley Soccer Association is hosting a soccer tournament next month as a fundraiser for the late Bill Keserich Jr.’s memorial fund.

The first annual “Billfest” will feature a seven-aside competitive adult co-ed double-knock-out soccer tournament and recreational adult co-ed soccer baseball on Saturday, April 20, and a kids soccer tournament on Sunday, April 21.

First prize for the adult tournament is $1,000 while the runners-up will receive $600. Other prizes will be awarded for the best team name, best dressed, worst ref and more.

“One day for the adults and another for the kids, just as Billy would have wanted,” said organizers. “We end the first evening with an open mic after the adult tournament to remember the bearded legend that was Billy K and celebrate what would have been his 54th birthday.”

Masters

The Cowichan 49ers ended their 2023-24 regular season with a bang, not just beating the visiting Fernwood Dragons, but shutting them out by a whopping 7-0 score.

Doug “De Bruyne” Nestor led the scoring with a hat-trick while Stuart “Shake ‘n Bake” Barker, Matt “Red Dragon” James, and Steve “Big Red” Scott potted singles. Fernwood themselves even helped extend the Cowichan lead with an own goal.

Fresh on the heels of a shutout by fill-in goalie Tyler Hughes, Darian Achurch returned to the net in fine form and earned his league-leading seventh shutout of the season.

Despite not scoring in their final game, Gjoa Carr still leads the 49ers in the team’s goal-scoring race with 13 while Scott and Nester are close behind with 11 and nine respectively.

The Cowichan Steelheads visit Bays United on Saturday, March 30 at 6:30 p.m. in their final game of the regular season.
